Same-Day Blocked Drain Clearing in Pennant Hills

The railway found the ridge in the 1880s, and building really picked up once the First World War ended. What followed was a solid run of Federation cottages and Californian-bungalow homes on generous blocks, with post-war brick infill and, more recently, townhouses closer to the station.

Each of those waves left its own drainage behind, and the oldest of them left earthenware. The townhouses near the station are the only part of the suburb that went in on modern pipe from the start.

Bushland doesn't stop at the fence line in a suburb like this, and that's the root of most of our call-outs, quite literally. Along Yarrara Road, established gardens back straight onto reserve edges, giving root systems decades to work their way into ageing joints.

Lane Cove National Park runs along the boundary and keeps that pressure topped up year after year. A mature root system will travel a fair way along a pipe run to reach the one joint that has already opened up.

Pennant Hills Road runs the same risk without the garden buffer, because the original earthenware sewer lines under the older homes along it have been degrading and gapping at the joints for generations. Either way, an old joint with any give in it is an open invitation.

Since NorthConnex opened in 2020, most of the heavy through-traffic has moved underground into the tunnel. The drainage under those houses was already old by then, and it has kept ageing since.

We clear the roots that are actually there first, then send a camera through to judge whether the line needs a full reline or will hold for years with a clean-out.

Root damage explains a lot of what we clear, but it isn't the only story on this ridge.

Ageing earthenware lines: the original sewer pipe under the older homes degrades and gaps at the joints over time, inviting blockages and, now and then, a full collapse further along the run. We repair or reline these with as little disruption as we can manage.

Slope and low-point wear: the ground here falls steeply toward the Lane Cove and Berowra valleys, and anything sloping concentrates debris wherever the run levels out, usually right where a fence line or retaining wall sits. Once that happens, a full clean-out is what actually fixes it, not another quick clear.

Storm surcharge on the ridge: heavy summer downpours on this elevated catchment can overload the older stormwater lines feeding the valleys below, sometimes within minutes of the rain starting. Clearing ahead of a storm keeps that risk well down.

This ridge suburb gets folded into the same run as our Carlingford jobs, not treated as an add-on. A call on a public holiday gets exactly the same treatment as one on an ordinary Wednesday.
